Tastes Great!

A potential social hotspot for fans of celebrities, Kevo boasts community-driven content on anyone who has ever made a headline. Entertainment icons, criminals, or even government-officials. And if it isn't there, you can add it yourself. I can see this being a must for anyone interested in celebs and celebrity gossip.

Content is added to Kevo through a weighted voting approval system (comparable in nature to the Digg karma system). This means that you can't go in there and add just anyone to the list. It is screened and voted up by other users. Adding any kind of content, whether it be pictures or gossip, requires that it go through the approval process. You can add your favorite bands, or runway models, should you want to. You probably can't (or shouldn't) add your vacation pictures. They won't go far unless you had pictures taken with Celebs on your vacation. Honestly though, who wants to see that?

In a brief interview, Will Jessup explains the Karma system:

The karma system is pretty cool - the basics are that as a user you have a karma number, based on the number of positive ratings your previous submissions have recieved. so you always start with karma =1 , but if you submit something and it's rated well, your karma may go up quickly.. then each profile has a fame # based on traffic and all sorts of things. ...both fame and karma are 1-1000...and any submission needs karma >= fame in order to be approved. When someone rates something, they also add or subtract their own karma depending on if they rate up or down... takes alittle bit of explaning, but its actually a pretty simple system

From your user control pannel, you can keep track of any contributions you add, and show the approval or disapproval ratings of your submissions. It will also show any comments left by other users. You can add your favorite Celeb profiles to your favorites list, and keep track of what they are doing or update with your own gossip. There is also a friends page, for people you meet through the Kevo site, and you can communicate with a built-in messaging system. Don't have friends yet? You can also browse around and see who is in the Kevo community by clicking on the "Community" link.

The "KevoSpy" is the list of contributions users add. This is where you rank them up or down. In the media section, you can see pictures or gossip that have been recently added and approved. Finally, you have the Celeb profiles. Here you can click through and read Blogs and info on the stars, celebs, Government officials, or criminals that other users have posted. There is also a neat filter that allows you to view categories of celebs... which is handy when you don't necessarily know what you're looking for when browsing around. For example, you can browse to the crime pages and filter on 'Serial Killer' to narrow your search.

This is, no doubt, a fun site. A great way to spend a few hours catching up on your celeb gossip, and meeting new people with the same interest as you. Definately an entertaining use of time and a great way to build up positive karma!!

Startup that Startup

Tastes Great!

With the majority of the world's population (assumedly) still in the dark about the revolution thats happening on the web, huge opportunities yet abound. No, you probably won't be able to pitch a Digg clone or a new AJAX calendar to anyone who subscribes to TechCrunch, but judging from the uptake on some of the most enshrined web 2.0 apps, there is still a huge market for just about anything.

That said, there is still much attention to grab out there. Go forth and do great things... but please build something good, or at least something you can flip on Ebay.
